We are excited to announce that Healthy Soils for Healthy Vines, a book written by Robert White, University of Melbourne, and Mark Krstic, Australian Wine Research Institute, and published by CABI, has won an award for Sustainable Vitiviniculture (wine growing). Granted by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), the OIV Award is a distinction given each year by an international jury composed of distinguished personalities in the vitivinicultural world.

Healthy Soils for Healthy Vines is a book for winegrowers and anyone growing grapevines or managing a vineyard. It delves into vineyard soils and how to manage and improve soil health for best vineyard performance. It covers the inherent and dynamic properties of soil health, how to choose which soil properties to monitor, how to monitor soil and vine performance, and how vineyard management practices affect soil health, fruit composition and wine sensory characters. It also covers the basic tenets of sustainable winegrowing and their significance for business resilience in the face of a changing climate.

This book is of practical value to anyone growing grapevines, managing a vineyard or making wine, from the small individual grower to the large wine company employee. It will be of special interest to winegrowers employing organic, natural, or biodynamic methods of production, where the primary focus is on the biological health of the soil.

The book follows CABI’s expertise in publishing and soil health. As an academic publisher in the life sciences, CABI helps people discover validated, evidence-based information to help them overcome the world’s biggest challenges, such as sustainable agriculture. CABI also leads the Africa Soil Health Consortium (ASHC) which aims to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers through better access to practical information about integrated soil fertility management.

Prof Robert White works at the University of Melbourne in Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences while Mark Krstic is the Managing Director of AWRI. Between them, they bring decades of experience in agricultural science and wine growing. The book was co-published with Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), the Australian Government agency responsible for scientific research. CSIRO commissioned and published the book in Australia and New Zealand; CABI holds rights everywhere else.

The official Ceremony 2021 of the OIV Awards will take place on 17 December at the Cité du Vin in Bordeaux, France.
